Welcome to the Stephen Mhando Digital Archive honouring, the late Stephen Semkubai Mhando, who was a founding father of Tanganyika, now known as Tanzania after the Union with Zanzibar.
A prominent statesman, diplomat, a pan-africanist, civil rights figure in the liberation of Tanganyika and other African countries. He was a key figure in establishing the pre-independence political movement, welfare system, education system, and freedom of the press. He was also an ally of the arts, supporting independence protest songs, underground literature, radio, and art from Swahili artistes.
He supported the feminist movement in Tanganyika, supporting independence struggle heroines. He also encouraged and empowered women in his own family to engage in government and civil society. Stephen Mhando’s legacy of service, has continued up the current Mhando and Mdoe generation.
